Work on email worth trusting

We're 14 people in Zurich building email for 12,000+ mailboxes that we are cryptographically incapable of reading. It's careful, sometimes unglamorous work, and it matters to real people every day. If that sounds better than shipping another engagement metric, keep reading.

Why work here

What it's actually like

Every company says it has a great culture. Here are four things you can hold us to instead.

Small team, big impact

With 14 of us, there is nowhere for work to hide - and no committee between your idea and production. The thing you ship on Tuesday protects thousands of mailboxes by Wednesday.

Privacy is the product

You will never be asked to add a tracker, weaken encryption for a metric, or quietly log something "just in case". The business model is subscriptions. That's it. It makes every decision simpler.

Built in the open

Our clients are open source and our audits are published, so your work gets read by strangers with strong opinions. Terrifying at first, then addictive. Your best code will have your name on it in public.

No dark patterns, no crunch

We don't trick customers into staying, and we don't burn staff to hit arbitrary dates. Profitable since 2024 means nobody is sprinting for a funding round. Evenings and weekends are yours.

The deal

What you get

Nothing exotic - no ball pits, no kombucha tap. Just the things that actually make a job good, written down so you can quote them back at us.

  • Transparent, non-discriminatory salary bands. Every role has a published band in CHF. Two people doing the same job at the same level earn the same. Negotiation skill is not a pay factor here.
  • Five weeks holiday. Taken, not banked. Anna will chase you if your balance gets embarrassing.
  • Zurich office or remote in CH/EU. The Zurich-West office is there if you want it; several of us work remotely across Switzerland and the EU. We fly everyone in twice a year.
  • Learning budget. CHF 2,500 a year for books, courses and conferences, no approval theatre - tell us afterwards what was good.
  • Hardware of your choice. Pick your machine, keyboard and chair. Reto only insists on full-disk encryption, obviously.
  • Sabbatical after 4 years. Two months, paid, no strings. Come back with a tan, a novel draft, or nothing to show for it at all.
How we hire

Four steps, two of them paid

We think unpaid interview homework is a dark pattern too. If we ask for your time beyond a conversation, we pay for it - whether or not you get the job.

1

Application review

A human reads every application - usually the hiring manager, often within a week. No keyword filters, no automated rejections. A short, honest email either way.

2

Take-home task

A small, realistic task scoped to about three hours, based on our actual work. We pay a fixed fee for your time and send real feedback, even if we don't proceed.

3

Team interview

A conversation with the people you'd actually work with - about your task, how you think, and what you'd want from us. No riddles, no whiteboard hazing.

4

Trial day

Spend a paid day working alongside the team, in Zurich or remotely. You interview us as much as we interview you. Offers usually follow within three days.

Open roles

We're hiring for three roles

Apply by plain email - it seems only right. Tell us briefly who you are and why this role; a CV or a link to your work is enough. No cover-letter essays required.

Zurich or remote (CH/EU)

Senior Backend Engineer

Work with Silvan and Nadia on the mail pipeline, storage encryption and Scroogle Send. Mostly Go and PostgreSQL, running on hardware we own. You'll care about boring, provable correctness more than clever abstractions - mail that silently vanishes is the one bug we never accept.

iOS Engineer

Join Jonas building our open-source iOS app: local crypto, offline-first sync and an inbox that opens fast on a five-year-old iPhone. Swift throughout. Your code will be public, audited and picked apart on the internet - we consider that a perk.

Zurich · English + German

Customer Support Specialist

Work with Anna helping customers in English and German - migrations, custom domains, the odd lost recovery phrase. No scripts, no ticket quotas, and the unusual pleasure of telling people their mailbox is unreadable even to you. Patience beats a technical CV here.

Equal opportunity, meant literally. We hire on what you can do and how you work with others - not on background, age, gender, who you love, where you're from, disability, or whether your CV has gaps in it. Ours do. If you need adjustments anywhere in the process, tell us and we'll sort it, no questions asked. And if you're unsure whether you're "qualified enough": apply. The confident-but-wrong already have.
